Spring into Nutrition

It is National Nutrition Month, a nutrition expert’s favorite holiday and this month we are going to be talking about all things nutrition.  The best way to celebrate National Nutrition Month is by practicing healthy eating habits, below are three tips to get you started.

Personalize Your Plate

Your eating habits and style should be personalized to you, your routine, preferences, and health status.  It sounds simple enough, but people often forget this.

The key to healthy eating is making it fit for your lifestyle.  You do not have to follow a strict diet to be healthy.  Allow for flexibility in the foods you choose, remember all foods fit in moderation.

Kick it Off with Breakfast

Breakfast is my favorite meal, so I definitely do not skip breakfast or any meal, I love to eat and fuel my body.

Start your day with breakfast to help keep your energy sustained throughout the day to focus on your tasks.  You will also find yourself less likely to casually snack throughout the day.

A healthy breakfast entails a combination of the following:

  • Lean protein - turkey bacon, tofu, eggs, or beans
  • Fiber - Whole grain toast, English muffin, or wrap
  • Have a side of fruit or vegetables
  • Dairy (for those who include it in their diets) – low-fat milk, cottage cheese

Prepare a Healthy Snack

When you know you are going to be busy on the run or out of the house all day, make sure to take a healthy snack with you. If you have a healthy snack ready to go, you are prepared for when you become hungry and this will decrease the possibility of grabbing a less than optimal snack or stopping for fast-food.
